Evening Bike Tour in Chiang Mai, Thailand
Spend a magical evening cycling the maze of small back lanes, exploring Chiang Mai’s old city, famous temples and monuments. Wrap up the night sampling street food with a night market food tour.
This is a totally chilled out bike tour – easy, easy. The terrain is all flat and where we have to cross any roads this is done together in an organised manner (and Chiang Mai drivers are very polite!)
Men and Woman need to cover their shoulders to enter temples and mosques. Woman need to cover their knees as well, so If you like to wear shorts when riding, we recommend bringing a sarong to wear for entering a temple or mosque.
Gather at the Grasshopper Shop
Meet at the Grasshopper Adventures Shop near Chiang Mai Gate at 5:45pm. The bike tour will depart at 6:00 pm sharp. After a quick fitting and briefing we pedal away…
Cycle “Sabai, Sabai” to Tha Pae Gate
Sabai, Sabai is Thai for being chilled out. On the way towards Chiang Mai’s old city eastern gate, Thapae Gate, we’ll cycle the old city’s quaint lanes. At this beautifully restored gate learn about Chiang Mai’s history as a trading hub.
Three Kings Monument and Wat Inthakin
Pedaling the twisting streets of the old city the next stop is Wat Intakhin with its serene 700 hundred-year-old white Buddha and the Three Kings Monument where you will hear about Chiang Mai’s found fathers.
Wat Lok Molee
Cycle to the city moat. Leaving the bikes by the side of the moat, walk across to Wat Lok Molee with its beautifully illuminated stupa and ornate wooden prayer hall. At this time of day you have a good chance of hearing the monks chanting their prayers.
Wat Chedi Luang
The next stop is Chiang Mai’s grandest monument. Wat Chedi Luang was built to house the ashes of a king and was once the home of the Emerald Buddha (now resident at Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok). It is now the home of the City Pillar and 3 auspicious trees which provide protection to the city.
Street Food at Chiang Mai Gate Market
For the last stop a little food tour of the Chiang Mai Gate Market. Walking through the market your guide with point out the different types of street food available. After selecting a some street food to sample sit down with a drink with your guide and enjoy the night market atmosphere.
Return to the Grasshopper Shop
It is really just hop, skip and jump from the Chiang Mai Gate Market to the Grasshopper Shop, but we will ride our bikes anyway. After finishing the tour you can always go back to the market to explore more of the street food delicacies.
The tour usually takes 3-4 hours but this is variable by group. Dinner is not included in the tour but we do include some fun and tasty snacks in little food tour at Chiang Mai Gate Market. We are usually back at the Grasshopper Adventures shop by 10 pm.
